DePuy Hip Recall

Thousands of patients who experienced problems with their hip replacements have filed lawsuits against DuPuy Orthopaedics and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson. Lawsuits allege that the hip devices are defective and that the companies knew about problems with DePuy hip replacements for two years before the recall was issued.

DePuy Hip Recall

Johnson & Johnson issued a recall of the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System hip implants in August 2010 due to an increased rate of revision surgery compared to similar devices.

A press release announcing the DePuy recall stated that one out of eight patients who received a DePuy hip replacement required surgery to repair or replace the device within five years.

Depuy Hip Complications

Patients with DePuy hip replacements have experienced symptoms including hip pain, hip swelling and walking problems. These symptoms can be caused by a number of potential problems with the device, including:

• Implant loosening
• Loose metal debris
• Metallosis,
• Bone fractures
• Hip implant dislocation
